Tso what?

After consulting with my girl Martha and googling a few different recipes, I formulated my own little recipe and it turned out delicious! 

Tso (what?) Chicken

Ingredients:
Cornstarch
4 cloves of garlic (minced)
1/2 tablespoon ginger (could use fresh minced, but I didn't)
3 tablespoons brown sugar
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
peel of small orange (make sure you wash it!)
3 eggwhites
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1.5  pounds of chicken (cubed)
EVOO




Step 1:
Pour one cup of cold water into a bowl
Mix in 2 tablespoons of flour (or 1 tablespoon of cornstarch)

Step 2:
Mix in minced garlic
1/2 tablespoon ginger
3 tablespoons brown sugar
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Orange peel
Stir well and set aside


Step 3:
In another bowl combine
3 eggwhites
6 tablespoons flour (or 3 tablespoons cornstarch)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Step 4:
Add chicken to step 3 mixture and coat well

Step 5:
Heat a good amount of EVOO in nonstick pan over medium heat
Put half of chicken into pan
Fry for 6-8 minutes, browning all sides

Step 6:
Transfer onto a paper towel lined plate to absorb extra oil

Step 7:
Repeat steps 5 & 6 with the rest of the chicken

Step 8:
During all of this, you can start preparing your other sides...and send a quick email, and pour yourself a glass of wine! ;) I prepared brown rice, steamed broccoli, veggie spring rolls, and fresh sliced pineapple. 


Step 9:
In clean frying pan add mixture from Step 2 
Heat on low until the mixture starts to thicken
Add the chicken to the mixture and coat

Step 10:
Bon appétit/食飯/Guten Appetit!

  2. Oooh fun! I'm not so handy in the kitchen but I'm learning. I made ribeye steak, broccoli, and rice with hollandaise tonight. I had never bought steak, let alone cooked it. I used eHow to figure out how to cook the steak. I rubbed a little Montreal seasoning on it and decided to pan sear it for two minutes on each side, then bake it in the oven at 450 degrees for five minutes on each side. Success. I even timed everything else properly. I couldn't believe it. I'll post a picture on Facebook when my iPhone cooperates!

    HW - Ohhh, timing! TJ is used to having at least one side cold. I have tried to cook steak twice here and (I thought) it was terrible, so next time I will try this method out, thanks for sharing :)

  4. Looks delicious! I might have to try that tonight. We had baked chicken breast wrapped in bacon and rubbed bbq sauce on for the last few minutes, with red mashed potatoes, broccoli and rolls. nothing fancy but it was good too! :) I'm working on a Thai recipe creation of my own (provided I can find all of the ingredients) I'll post if I am successful (and if it's any good!) :)

  5. CMD - yum your recipe sounds delicious as well - we love BBQ and bacon so maybe we will try that tonight! Is the bacon in Finland different than back home? We have an "American Style" bacon at our market that is very, very thin, and then there is also a big hunk of bacon (like 2-3 inches thick!) which I think is more "German Style"?

    Give it a try one night, you won't be disappointed! It tasted so much healthier than the take out stuff, and its pretty much fool proof (next time I will for sure be making it with the cornstarch though, so it's a little crispier)

  10. Yeah, we have "American" bacon here too. I think they have the thicker, more European style also, but I haven't really paid attention. I discovered the American kind and quit looking after that :) PS- tried your recipe tonight... 2 thumbs up from us! :)

  13. Yes, give it a try for sure, you won't be disappointed. It was a great dinner but not so great the next day for lunch (I guess thats why Chinese food in the states is LOADED with MSG!) Mmm, that sounds delish I would love to give it a try :)
