Wedding gowns, aisle 7

I understand that this is last months news, but I was living under a rock in Germany when it was released here in the States that Costco was adding a full service wedding boutique to their stores. Complete with rings, flowers, cake, invitations, and the honeymoon - now you can even purchase your wedding gown at the wholesale discount club.

Has your jaw dropped? Mine did! Take a look for yourself:

Now feel free to call me a pompous bitch if you wish, but there is no way in hell I would ever purchase a 'quality, couture-inspired wedding gown' at the same place where I can sample pigs-in-a-blanket and then check out at Register 9 with a 24 pack of toilet paper and 50 pounds of kitty litter.

Personally, I think that the total experience of finding that perfect dress is one that I will remember for the rest of my life - and it certainly doesn't involve me modeling my gown in the three way mirror with shopping carts filled by gallons of milk and extra large jars of pickles being pushed around behind me.

Don't get me wrong, we are planning our wedding on a budget, too, but there are plenty of other money saving options out there that I will be scoping out besides purchasing my gown at the bulk-buy grocery store.

What do you think? Would you or have you bought your wedding gown at Costco?

  2. Mother ... I just wrote a really long post and stupid Blogger ruined it.

I'd buy one from Costco. I love the first one and the last one! Would just want to make sure I could have necessary alterations made.

But you're right, you're not going to get the intimate experience of shopping for a dress at boutiques, etc. And if that's an important experience for you, go with it! You're having a much bigger wedding than I had and I would have wanted everything you want.

  3. This is crazy! I had not heard about this either. They aren't horrible looking, but yeah, I think it is just the idea of buying it there. I even feel embarrassed when I tell people I bought my dress for my wedding (Vegas wedding, short, cute, white party dress) at Dillards. They give me a kind of pity look! hah, can you imagine if it was from CostCo. Look out, I am sure WalMart is next to jump on that band wagon!

  4. So this was new news to me! I hadn't heard anything about this! but Um seriously? I don't think it will be too successful. If it is then that is great! Of course i didn't really have an intimate time finding my dress_ I worked for a bridal store and when a new style dress came in I knew it was mine (that was before I was even engaged!) So I only tried on one wedding dress in my whole entire life :) but still, Costco? No thanks!

  5. I had heard about this... maybe from another blog. i can't remember.. but i suppose if they really are great dresses, it wouldn't be a bad thing to look.. but i totally agree with the intimate experience part... would be kind of weird looking over and seeing all of these families checking you out while you try on dresses. lol.. and they're shopping they're 40lbs of eggs. :) They don't look too bad though. Interesting!

  9. Yes, I would purchase from Costco. I spent right around $495 on my wedding dress in a $30K wedding. I just could not imagine spending tons of money ($495 was too much in my mind)for a dress that I would wear 1 day and by the end of the night was sweaty, dirty, beer-stained, etc. To each his own, though. At the same time, though, I really want to take my daughter to Kleinfeld in NYC when she gets married and I hope to have unlimited budget. LOL

  10. Was I under a rock too? I didn't know this! I would probably have bought a wedding dress at Costco, but my mother probably wouldn't have allowed it.
