One Of My Favorite Holiday Memories

One of my favorite holiday memories reflects back on the times when I would take a yearly bus trip to NYC with my mother and grandmother each December.

About 50 or so of us would hop onto a chartered bus super early in the morning, and we'd arrived in New York City around 7am. The day was filled with shopping on Canal Street, gawking at the stores on 5th Avenue, eating at a fancy restaurant (which I'm sure wasn't truly "fancy", but felt like it because it was in NYC!), taking in the sights and lights and sounds, and making sure to catch the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular.

I'm not sure how we packed so much fun in before we boarded the bus at 10pm, but I think that all of the rushing around just added to the excitement of the day! It was true and pure holiday magic, and the memories continue to make my heart smile.

When I reflect on Christmas's past, I love that all of my absolute favorite holiday memories have nothing to do with gifts ... they all revolve around good holiday fun, and quality time spent with family and friends.

So to anyone who is worrying about whether you've picked out the perfect present, or who is stressed out because you haven't found a gift yet and Christmas is only a couple of days away ... I bet if you reflect back on your own childhood you will remember that your favorite holiday memories have nothing to do with presents, but have everything to do with who you were present with.

  1. the older I get the more confident I feel about making memories over getting or giving gifts. i live near new york city (in jersey city, just a quick 10-minute train ride away from manhattan), and i bought my mother a plane ticket to come visit just before Christmas in lieu of giving a big gift... the memories of spending that time with her can never have a price tag, those times don't happen too often because she lives 500 miles away. this year we won't be traveling to our parents homes ON Christmas day, and i'm feeling a bit sad and liberated at the same time.. maybe we'll be making the best Christmas memory this year without any stress ;)

  2. Growing up, my middle brother's room was right next to mine. As excited kids always do on Christmas morning, I would wake up before the sun in anticipation of what Santa had brought us. Before waking our parents up, I would crawl into my brother's bed with him to wait until it was acceptable to get them awake. Sometimes I'd fall back asleep, sometimes we'd watch tv or play Nintendo (yes, the original). At the time, I could only think about the gifts waiting for me under the tree, but now, I realize how special those mornings, before the gifts were opened, truly were.

  3. agreed, holiday gifts aren't really what's important- it's the memories that count. There are so many great holiday memories that I have! I can't pick just one- but it has to be when I believed in santa!

  6. Oh, how I would love to be in NYC over Christmas! One of my absolute favorite Christmas memories was singing silent night by candle light Christmas Eve night at our old church when I was little. So peaceful and serene..
