Wherever You Are, Be All There

We are all settled here in the apartment - even the toaster and pots and pans and vacuum have all found their homes - but there's something that feels very permanent to me about hanging things on the wall, so I've been avoiding it.

Why?

Well, because I'd be lying if I said that every time TJ takes a little too long doing only God knows what back in the locker room after a practice or a game that I don't start to envision him greeting me with his hockey bag over his shoulder and his sticks in his hand, telling me that he's been released and it's time to pack up and move again.

I admit it - last year scarred me. And I know that I should be over it by now - but I guess year six was my first real taste of the harsh reality of hockey politics, and I don't think that I'll ever not have expectations of the worst silently dancing in the back of my head ever again.

So I've been avoiding hanging the frames - because to me, that means that we're staying here ... and I just don't know if we'll be staying here the entire season.

Don't get me wrong - we love it here and if it were up to us, we'd finish out TJs career here ... but in this very "here today, gone tomorrow" hockey world ... it's simply not up to us whether we go or we stay.

But I realized this past weekend that I was kind of doing us a disservice by not hanging the frames on the wall. This apartment is our space for the time being to laugh and argue and make up and dream and live and love ... and it's important to treat it as such ... to make it our own ... even if, God forbid, it's only "our own" until tomorrow.

So I said yes - I hung some of the frames, which are all travel themed and now provide me with four little daily reminders about the important things to stay focused on while living this sometimes crazy hockey life ...

  2. Such inspiration hanging on your wall. Love it. Especially the "not all those who wander" quote. :)

  4. I absolutely love this. The project, your post, your honesty and obviously your super cute gallery wall. We have a travel themed guest room that is very much a work in progress, but I'm feeling inspired now to update it!!

  5. Seriously, that wall is GORGEOUS. Can I be honest? I have the same issue of not wanting to make a place home until I'm sure that it's THE home for me and how do you ever know!?!

This was a YES worth saying in so many ways. Plus, I wish that I had a travel themed gallery wall too! Thank you for joining dear.

  6. I LOVE your gallery wall! I cannot imagine dealing with the different emotions that you do with TJ's job. After Matt lost his job in January of this year, 4 months before our wedding - I absolutely dread random mid-morning phone calls. I never ever wish for that to happen again.... So, I can only imagine how it is in a much more volatile industry!

  8. I love your travel-themed prints! Are they from etsy?

And I am glad you "said yes" to making your house a home. With my first two apartments, I didn't hang up decorations bc I knew I was moving in a year. But I realize now that that was silly. And now I decorate my one year lease spaces.

  9. Love those prints as well as the layout :) I finally realized where the one I asked you about on instagram was from -- Vol.25! Just bought a few more of her prints over the weekend while they were on sale!

  11. I love the wall, I love the quotes, and think its so great you're embracing your home, even if it is just for the time being.

  12. Oh, those prints are all lovely. I know what you mean about the "hanging up stuff on the wall makes things permanent". I felt the same way in our apartment and it took me two years (gasp!) to hang up stuff on the walls. How's that for "saying yes to something" two years late? ;)

  13. I love that wall gallery. I am the same way as you I never decorate the walls, because as soon as I do we have a new job to go too. I know that we aren't done moving yet either so i never put anything on the walls.

  15. Oh my god. I am totally copying everything from that wall!!!! I love each one.

Its so hard to have faith and not feel in control. One day you will look back though & miss this time. It seems silly but that is what I tell myself. There is something slightly exciting about not knowing the future. Try to hold on to that :)

  16. I totally understand you and I have to admit that I have the same "problem". It always takes me forever to decide what to hang where and when to hang it! I love your memory wall and all the wonderful quotes! That world painting is awesome!
Stay that strong woman I have had the pleasure to get to know and all will be fine, sweet friend! xxx

  17. I love this! I find myself avoiding hanging things on the wall when we won't be living here for that long and I don't know if we'll be back next year. Yet every time I hang something new on the wall I get so happy about it! I love your blog because although it's travel and hockey based (neither of which do I participate in) I always find myself agreeing with your posts :)

  18. i'm the complete opposite and as soon as we move into a place, things are on the wall. even though the longest we've lived in a place has been one year. i know where you'er coming from though, it would be hard to not knowhow long exactly you will be in one place. and i am in LOVE with that world map!
